OMG ERTHQK

When I woke up this morning, I learned about my hometown's earthquake via Twitter as it happened. (In Honolulu it's, well, exactly like every other day of the year in Oahu.  Balmy and peaceful.)  I called my mother in Washington to see whether she felt it.  "YES!" she said, "I rushed in to protect the Italian plates, which were rattling on the shelves.  Then I thought, 'wait - this isn't a good idea,' and ran out the door."

Oh this made me laugh! although I do hope your mother's plates survived okay.

  2. Thanks, litlove! As far as I know, there were no china casualties...

Love it--and glad to hear that your family is okay! (I admit that as a native Southern Californian, I've been known to roll over and go back to sleep during earthquakes...) xSarah

  4. Apparently that's what eventually happened to Londoners during the worst of the Blitz. They were so tired after night after night of nonstop bombing that eventually many just thought "Screw it, I'd rather risk death than go down to the shelter," when the sirens went off.

During my first earthquake (a very mild, fairly brief one), I was in bed, just falling asleep, when I sat straight up and said (with no touch of whimsy at all), "Did a giant just kick our house?".

Our family's classic earthquake story involves my mother waking up during a quake and telling my father that there was a cat on the roof. My father's reply: "It would have to be a bear. It's an earthquake. Go back to sleep." xS
